Work begins on D&R Custom Steel plant in Bowmanville; mayor says Ganawa plans local expansion

Work has begun on a new D&R Custom Steel Inc. plant in Bowmanville, and The Ganawa Company Ltd. is planning to expand its local operations, according to a March 12 statement from Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster.

The update points to activity among two local manufacturers, but the mayor’s statement did not include a completion date or construction timeline for the D&R facility. It also did not provide a location, timing or job numbers for Ganawa’s planned expansion.

Foster said the new D&R plant is being built for the company’s 65 workers. He said that once the company moves into the larger facility, it will be able to handle metal treatment on-site “at a much larger scale,” which he said would reduce the need to send that work to U.S. companies.

On Ganawa, Foster said the company is “set to expand local operations and grow their team.” No further details were provided about what the expansion would involve.

Foster also credited Invest Clarington’s Clarington Concierge Program with supporting D&R’s anticipated relocation.

He said the Ontario government is supporting the move with AMIC loan funding through the Regional Development Program. The statement did not include the loan amount or terms.

The mayor’s remarks were issued as a “Mayor’s Statement” on the Municipality of Clarington website.
