Durham Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer John Henry marked the start of National AccessAbility Week in a statement released by Durham Region from Whitby on May 31, noting this year’s theme, “Building a Strong, Accessible Canada.”

The annual national week focuses on accessibility and disability, and the statement outlines how Durham Region describes its approach to accessibility.

Henry said National AccessAbility Week is a time to recognize “the leadership, resilience and achievements of persons with disabilities,” and to recognize individuals and organizations working to remove barriers.

Henry said the theme “Building a Strong, Accessible Canada” “reminds us that accessibility benefits everyone.”

Henry said the region takes a “big-picture approach” to accessibility, including “embedding inclusion into our programs, services, spaces, communication and workforce.”

The statement did not include details about local events or specific Durham Region projects related to the week, and it did not include new programs, timelines or service changes.

National AccessAbility Week began May 31, according to the statement.
