Durham College Launches New Mental Health Resources for Students and Employees
Durham College in Oshawa has announced new resources aimed at enhancing mental health support for students and employees. The initiative comes as the college prepares for the fall 2024 semester, which will see the first cohort of students who experienced the pandemic during their high school years.
Jennifer Elliott, Director of the Campus Health and Wellness Centre (CHWC) at Durham College, stated that there has been a significant increase in the complexity of students' mental health challenges since the pandemic. In response, the college has implemented various supports to address these needs.
To assist employees in supporting student mental health, the CHWC has developed a comprehensive guide and a quick reference flowsheet. These resources are designed to enhance employees' understanding of mental health issues and to help them navigate the college's emergency processes. Elliott noted that these resources were created in response to the growing demand for support among staff who assist students.
Additionally, Durham College is offering ongoing opportunities for employees to engage with CHWC mental health clinicians. Employees can ask questions and learn how to better support students in managing their mental health.
For students, the CHWC provides access to confidential services through a team of healthcare professionals. Students are encouraged to visit the CHWC to learn about available resources, including the online Wellness Directory, which outlines additional support options.
On September 10, Durham College will host the Canadian Mental Health Association Durham’s Safety Expo to recognize World Suicide Prevention Day. This event will feature presentations and resource booths on topics such as transgender care and suicide prevention, aimed at providing valuable insights and support to the community.
