Durham College to add transfer-credit pre-assessments and remove credit-transfer fee starting Winter 2027
Durham College will begin offering eligible applicants an unofficial pre-assessment of potential transfer credits before they accept an offer of admission for the Winter 2027 intake, and it will eliminate its Credit Transfer application fee for students starting Winter 2027 programs and beyond.
The changes affect people who have completed post-secondary courses at another college or university and want those credits considered toward a Durham College program. Under the new process, the pre-assessment will take place before an applicant accepts an offer and pays a tuition deposit.
Transfer Services will review eligible post-secondary transcripts received through the Ontario Colleges Application Service (OCAS) and compare them with existing Durham College transfer-credit equivalencies.
When an equivalency exists, eligible applicants may receive an unofficial pre-assessment outlining courses that could qualify for transfer credit. The pre-assessment may also identify previously completed courses that match Durham College courses.
Durham College will also remove the Credit Transfer application fee beginning with Winter 2027. The college says the fee will be eliminated whether potential transfer credits are identified through the pre-assessment process or submitted for an individual review through the standard process.
Courses without an established Durham College transfer-credit equivalency will still require an individual review by Transfer Services. Those reviews will also be free starting in Winter 2027.
The college says the pre-assessment is based on existing transfer-credit equivalencies and does not guarantee transfer credit. A final review will take place after a student accepts an offer of admission and pays a non-refundable tuition deposit. If transfer credits are approved, they are added to the student’s academic record.
In a statement posted Oct. 14, Thom MacDonald, associate vice-president of enrolment and registrar, said the change is intended to give applicants more information earlier in the decision-making process.
