Durham Region Begins Watermain Lining Project in Oshawa and Whitby
The Regional Municipality of Durham has commenced a project to clean and structurally line watermains in Oshawa and Whitby. This project, part of the ongoing infrastructure maintenance program, aims to renew aging infrastructure, improve water quality, and reduce the risk of watermain breaks.
Most of the work will be performed inside the pipes, minimizing the need for trench excavation. However, small localized excavations will be necessary at valve and fire hydrant locations and at intervals along the watermain for cleaning, inspection, and lining equipment access. Disruptions to sidewalks, driveways, lawns, roadways, or boulevards will be reinstated after the construction work is completed.
The contractor, North Rock Group Ltd, began work in Oshawa in April 2024 and expects to complete it by August 2024. Work in Whitby started in July 2024 and is expected to finish in the fall. Clean-up and restoration are scheduled for completion in the spring of 2025. Unfavorable weather conditions may affect the work schedule.
Full road closures are not anticipated. Access to driveways and all commercial and residential properties will be maintained in most instances, including for emergency traffic and waste collection. The Region will make efforts to complete the work as quickly as possible.
