Emancipation Day Celebration in Durham Region
On August 1, Durham Region will recognize Emancipation Day with a community celebration at Esplanade Park in Pickering from 3 to 8 p.m. The event will feature live performances, food vendors, and an art exhibition. Emancipation Day commemorates the abolition of slavery in Canada in 1834, marking a significant moment in the history of people of African descent in the country. The celebration aims to honor the legacy of freedom and promote awareness of the ongoing efforts to address systemic racism. The Pan-African flag will be raised at Regional Headquarters as part of the observance.
