Free compost pickup scheduled May 9 at Clarington Operations Depot 42 in Bowmanville

Durham Region will hold a free compost pickup on Saturday, May 9, from 8 a.m. to noon at Clarington Operations Depot 42, 178 Darlington-Clarke Townline Road in Bowmanville, south of Highway 2.

The Bowmanville pickup is part of a series of compost giveaways scheduled across Durham Region between April 25 and May 30, with events in Ajax, Oshawa, Whitby, Cannington, Pickering, Port Perry and Uxbridge.

The events are self-serve. Residents must bring a shovel and containers to carry compost.

Compost will be available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last, with a limit of four reusable containers per vehicle.

Green bins and backyard composters will not be available for sale or exchange at the events.

Other pickup dates and locations are as follows:

  • Saturday, April 25 (8 a.m. to noon, rain or shine): Ajax Operations Centre, 800 Salem Road North, Ajax; and Lakeview Park parking lot, Kluane Avenue, Oshawa.
  • Saturday, May 2 (8 a.m. to noon, rain or shine): Whitby Operations Centre, 333 McKinney Drive, Whitby; and Rick MacLeish Memorial Community Centre parking lot, 91 Elliot Street, Cannington.
  • Saturday, May 23 (8 a.m. to noon): Don Beer Arena parking lot, 940 Dillingham Road, Pickering; and Scugog Community Recreation Centre parking lot, 1655 Reach Street, Port Perry.
  • Saturday, May 30 (8 a.m. to noon): Uxbridge Arena & Recreation Centre parking lot, 291 Brock Street West, Uxbridge.

Durham Region is encouraging attendees to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to a local food bank.
