Grade 5 Action Pass Available for 2024-2025 School Year in Durham Region

The Grade 5 Action Pass will be available for the 2024-2025 school year, as announced by the Durham Region Health Department in collaboration with local municipal recreation centres and the Oshawa Mary Street YMCA. This pass allows Grade 5 students to access free public swimming, skating, and drop-in programs at participating recreation centres across Durham Region from September 2024 to August 2025.

Students will receive information about the pass from their schools at the start of the school year. Alternatively, they can download an information card from the Durham Region website. To obtain the pass, students must present a parent or guardian, proof of age, proof of address, and the information card at their local municipal recreation centre.

The initiative aims to encourage physical activity among children, aligning with the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth, which recommend that children accumulate at least one hour of moderate physical activity daily. However, a report by ParticipACTION indicates that only 39% of children and youth in Canada meet this recommendation.

The Grade 5 Action Pass is supported by various municipalities, including the Township of Scugog, City of Pickering, Town of Ajax, Town of Whitby, City of Oshawa, Municipality of Clarington, Township of Uxbridge, and Township of Brock.
