Ontario Tech says $100,000 Fidelity gift will fund scholarships and fintech cybersecurity research
Ontario Tech University announced in a news release dated Oct. 29 that it has received a $100,000 gift from Fidelity Investments Canada ULC to support scholarships and cybersecurity research at its Oshawa campus.
The funding is divided between student awards in the Faculty of Business and Information Technology and research at the university’s Institute for Cybersecurity and Resilient Systems, outlining how the contribution will be used.
Of the $100,000, $30,000 is earmarked for undergraduate scholarships in select business and information-technology programs. Ontario Tech’s undergraduate scholarship matching program will match that amount, bringing the undergraduate scholarship total to $60,000. The awards will be named the Fidelity Investments Canada Scholarships.
Another $20,000 will fund graduate scholarships in select business and IT programs, providing four $5,000 awards to be named the Fidelity Investments Canada Graduate Scholarships.
The remaining $50,000 will go to the Institute for Cybersecurity and Resilient Systems for financial-technology (fintech) cybersecurity research, the university said.
“Cybersecurity is increasingly a business and societal challenge as well as a technical one,” said Dr. Carolyn McGregor AM, dean of Ontario Tech’s Faculty of Business and Information Technology, in the release.
Ontario Tech said the gift builds on Fidelity Investments Canada’s existing relationship with the university, including participation in corporate training, co-op and internship opportunities for students, and sponsorship of Ontario Tech Community Day.
