Toronto man charged after alleged forged vehicle ownership documents used at Ajax Service Ontario
A 52-year-old Toronto man has been charged after Durham Regional Police allege forged vehicle ownership documents were used in an attempt to transfer a 2019 Dodge Caravan at a Service Ontario office in Ajax on Oct. 20, 2026.
The case involves documents used to change a vehicle’s ownership, a process that can affect registered owners if paperwork is altered or falsified. Police said they are investigating and believe there may be additional victims.
Durham Regional Police identified the accused as Ion Boana, 52, of Toronto. Police said he is charged with fraud over $5,000, uttering a forged document, and altering a document to defraud.
Police said officers were called to the Ajax Service Ontario office on Oct. 20, 2026 for a reported fraud in progress after staff suspected the ownership documentation presented to transfer the vehicle was fraudulent.
Service Ontario employees noticed the ownership document had not been signed by the registered owner, police said.
The suspect then left the office and went to his vehicle alone, police said, before returning a short time later with the same documents, now bearing a signature. Police said an employee contacted officers after the documents were presented again.
Employees also told police the accused had attended the location several times before and was believed to have registered vehicles using fraudulent documentation.
Boana was released on an undertaking with conditions, police said.
