Clarington says bylaw officers are patrolling school zones during drop-off and pick-up times

Clarington municipal law enforcement officers are conducting regular patrols in school zones in Clarington during student drop-off and pick-up times, according to a back-to-school safety post published by the Municipality of Clarington on Sept. 8, 2026.

The municipality says the patrols will focus on drivers following posted rules in and around school areas, including parking and stopping restrictions, posted speed limits, and requirements related to crossing guards and school buses.

A “No Parking” sign means drivers cannot park there. The municipality says temporary stopping is allowed only while actively loading or unloading passengers or goods, and that unattended vehicles or vehicles stopped longer than needed may be ticketed.

A “No Stopping” sign means drivers cannot stop at any time in that area, including briefly to pick up or drop off passengers. The municipality says vehicles may be ticketed.

Some school zones in Clarington are posted at 30 km/h.

It is illegal to use a hand-held device while driving.

At school crosswalks with crossing guards, the municipality advises drivers to wait for a crossing guard’s third whistle before proceeding. The municipality says the third whistle indicates children have finished crossing and the guard has returned to the sidewalk or curb.

Drivers must stop for a school bus when its upper red lights are flashing and its stop arm is extended. Drivers must remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing, the stop arm retracts, and the bus begins to move.

The municipality also defines Community Safety Zones as designated areas where public safety is of “special concern,” including near schools. The municipality says penalties for violations are increased in those zones.
