DRPS Starts Digital Recruitment Campaign Amid Staffing and Growth Challenges
The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) began a digital-first recruitment campaign on July 3, 2025. According to DRPS, the campaign will run through September and will use social media, display ads, and other online platforms to reach potential applicants.
DRPS cites a highly competitive recruitment landscape as a key reason for this campaign. The organization reports that projected population growth in Durham Region, expected to increase by 40 percent by 2046 and reach about 1.3 million by 2051, is contributing to increased demand for police staffing. The Service also attributes recruitment challenges to higher retirement rates, changes in public perceptions of policing, and a smaller pool of applicants.
DRPS Chief Peter Moreira stated that the new campaign is about reaching people interested in a policing career and described policing as a challenging profession. According to DRPS, the campaign is an expansion of existing recruitment efforts aimed at addressing current staffing needs as well as anticipated future demands.
Board Chair Shaun Collier said the region’s rapid growth brings new demands and challenges. Collier stated, "We need to ensure we have the strength and diversity in our service to meet those evolving needs."
