Durham police urge candy checks after wire and needle discoveries in Ajax and Pickering
Durham Regional Police are urging parents and guardians to inspect Halloween candy collected Oct. 31 after two reports of possible tampering in Ajax and Pickering involving wire embedded in a gummy candy and a sewing needle found loose among collected treats. No injuries were reported in either incident, police said in a Nov. 5 release.
In Ajax, a family found a small piece of wire embedded inside a packaged gummy candy collected in the Rossland Road West and Church Street North area. Police said the family could not determine where it had received the candy.
In Pickering, a family discovered a sewing needle while sorting treats collected in the Sultana Square, Foxwood Trail and Braeburn Crescent area. The needle was loose among the collected candy, not inside any candy or chip packaging, police said.
Police seized the items, and both investigations remain ongoing to determine how the objects became associated with the candy. The service asked parents and guardians to inspect all Halloween candy before it is consumed and to report suspicious items to police.
