Durham Region line painting underway on regional roads through November

Durham Region’s annual road line-painting season is underway, with crews scheduled to work from June to November on regional roads totaling more than 3,300 lane-kilometres, primarily on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The work involves slow-moving painting vehicles and follow-up trucks, and the region is asking drivers to use caution and keep back from the convoy while crews apply and dry fresh paint.

The Regional Municipality of Durham said line painting will take place on all regional roads. It will also occur on select local municipal roads and at various Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) on- and off-ramp intersections.

Durham Region said occasional weekend and nighttime operations are also planned during the June-to-November schedule.

Line painting is a moving operation that progresses at reduced speeds so crews can apply road paint properly. Follow-up trucks travel behind the vehicles applying paint to act as a buffer and allow time for the paint to dry.

Durham Region is asking drivers not to cross freshly painted lines; the region said doing so can damage vehicles and compromise the reflectivity and quality of the lane markings.

The paint contains glass beads to help the lines reflect, the region said.

Durham Region said road markings are used to define lanes and indicate permitted and prohibited movements for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
