Mid-July work planned for Hetherington Drive stormwater outlet, with up to five days of daytime trail closures
Construction is scheduled to start in mid-July on the Hetherington Drive Stormwater Outlet Improvement Project in the Bowmanville Valley Conservation Area, with brief daytime closures planned on parts of the Bowmanville Valley Trail totalling no more than five working days and possible restrictions for through traffic on Hetherington Drive east of Lawrence Crescent.
For nearby residents and regular trail users, the municipality says the work is planned so the trail is open most days and local access is maintained even if through traffic is temporarily diverted. The municipality also says garbage and recycling collection, deliveries and pedestrian access are to continue without interruption.
The project area is on Hetherington Drive, east of Lawrence Crescent. The stormwater outlet was originally constructed in 1972.
The planned work includes installation of a new oil-grit separator to filter pollutants such as oil, grit and debris.
The project also includes enhancements to the existing outlet swale to slow stormwater flow, improve natural filtration and reduce contaminants before water is released into Bowmanville Creek.
For trail users, the Bowmanville Valley Trail is planned to remain open for most of the construction period, with brief daytime closures for activities such as material deliveries or restoration. The municipality says any closures will total no more than five working days, and the trail is to be reopened and cleared at the end of each workday.
For drivers, Hetherington Drive east of Lawrence Crescent may be temporarily closed to through traffic but remain open to local traffic. Access to homes is to be maintained, except for short periods when work is directly in front of a driveway or walkway.
Ontario provided $509,118 for the project through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, according to the Municipality of Clarington.
Durham Region also plans to relocate about 20 metres of watermain along Hetherington Drive, the municipality said.
