Ontario to Replace Two Overpasses in Oshawa for Highway 401 Widening Project
The Ontario government announced on July 3, 2025, that it will replace the Park Road and Cubert Street overpasses in Oshawa as part of plans to widen Highway 401 to ten lanes. The Ministry of Transportation stated that the contract for this project also includes resurfacing eastbound lanes of Highway 401, between east of Harmony Road and Courtice Road.
The replacement of these overpasses is part of ongoing highway expansion in Oshawa. The Ministry of Transportation reported that this step is necessary to support future widening of Highway 401.
Dufferin Construction Company, a division of CRH Canada Group Inc. of Oakville, Ontario, was awarded the contract for the overpass replacements, according to the Ministry. The Ministry of Transportation cited data showing that more than 10,000 trucks use Highway 401 each day, carrying approximately $380 million in goods.
The Ministry also referenced a report from the Canadian Centre for Economic Analysis estimating that traffic gridlock may cost Ontario’s economy up to $56 billion each year. The analysis further estimates that, if left unaddressed, annual gridlock costs could rise to $108 billion by 2044.
