Clarington Municipality Offers Free KI Pills to Residents and Businesses Near Nuclear Stations

The Municipality of Clarington has announced that potassium iodide (KI) pills are available at no cost to residents and businesses located within 10 kilometres of Clarington’s two nuclear generating stations. The municipality stated that this distribution is a precautionary measure for those living or working near the nuclear facilities.

According to the Municipality of Clarington, KI pills help protect the thyroid gland in case of exposure to radioactive iodine during a nuclear incident. The advisory indicates that households and businesses within the specified 10-kilometre area are eligible to obtain the pills.

The municipality advised that KI pills should be kept in the home or workplace and used only if instructed by public health authorities. Detailed guidance on obtaining and storing the pills is provided in the municipal announcement.

This action is part of the emergency preparedness protocols for the areas surrounding the nuclear generating stations in Clarington.
