Durham Region sets June 24 meeting on Ritson Road North widening study in Oshawa
Durham Region will hold a public information centre (PIC) on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, about an environmental assessment for reconstructing and widening Ritson Road North (Regional Road 16) in Oshawa, covering about 1.75 kilometres from north of Taunton Road (Regional Road 4) to south of Conlin Road. The meeting runs from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Kedron United Church, 1995 Ritson Road North.
The study is the formal step that will shape the design for planned road work along that stretch of Ritson Road North, including potential changes at intersections in the study area. Durham Region has set July 16, 2026, as the deadline for comments.
The project is being studied under a Schedule C Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (October 2000, as amended in 2024).
Durham’s 2017 Transportation Master Plan identified widening Ritson Road as the preferred solution, citing operational deficiencies, road safety and increasing traffic volumes.
According to Durham Region’s notice, Phase 1 (Identify the Problem or Opportunity) and Phase 2 (Identify Alternative Solutions and Establish the Preferred Solution) of the municipal class environmental assessment process were satisfied through the transportation master plan and reconfirmed through background work conducted for the current study.
The current study is proceeding with Phase 3 (Examine Alternative Methods of Implementing the Preferred Solution) and Phase 4 (Prepare an Environmental Study Report). Durham Region’s notice states the study will review alternative design concepts for the reconstruction and widening, including intersection modifications within the study area.
At the June 24 meeting, staff will outline the study process and next steps and present the evaluation of alternative design concepts and the preferred solution.
Materials from the meeting will be posted starting June 25 at durham.ca/RitsonRoadEA.
After the study, Durham Region plans to release an Environmental Study Report for a 30-day public review period and issue a Notice of Study Completion when it is available.
