Canadian Armed Forces Announces New Cyber Command
On September 26, 2024, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) announced the creation of the Canadian Armed Forces Cyber Command (CAFCYBERCOM). The announcement was made by Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence, and General Jennie Carignan, Chief of the Defence Staff. CAFCYBERCOM will consolidate the CAF's cyber capabilities into a single entity aimed at enhancing readiness against cyber threats.
Major-General Dave Yarker will lead the new command, overseeing cyber operations, force sustainment, management, and development. The command will work closely with the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSE) to develop offensive and defensive cyber operations capabilities. This partnership has evolved over the past decade to include cybersecurity and cyber operations.
CAFCYBERCOM will support Canada's NATO commitments, including the Virtual Cyber Incident Support Capability and the Sovereign Cyber Effects Provided Voluntarily by Allies. The creation of the command aligns with similar initiatives by Canada's allies in NORAD, the Five Eyes alliance, and NATO. The new command aims to improve interoperability with allies and enhance Canada's ability to counter cyber threats.
