District Energy System in Courtice Transit-Oriented Community
The General Government Committee meeting on February 5, 2024, included a presentation by Ian McVey, Manager of Sustainability for the Regional Municipality of Durham, regarding the proposed District Energy System (DES) for the Courtice Transit-Oriented Community (CTOC). McVey outlined the strategic alignment of the DES with Envision Durham and the Durham Community Energy Plan. The DES aims to leverage waste heat from regional infrastructure in the adjacent Clarington Energy Park. The Regional Council endorsed the concept of the DES, highlighting its potential to contribute over 15 percent of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions by 2050, positioning it as a key strategy for decarbonization in Durham Region. The resolution passed calls for collaboration between the Municipality of Clarington and the Regional Municipality of Durham to integrate the DES into the CTOC Secondary Plan.
