Ontario Agricultural Sustainability Initiative Receives $9 Million Investment
The governments of Canada and Ontario have announced an investment of $9 million in the Ontario Agricultural Sustainability Initiative. This funding is part of the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership and aims to assist farmers in enhancing the sustainability and competitiveness of their operations.
The funding will support the adoption of new technologies and best management practices, focusing on improving soil health, water quality, and energy efficiency. Farmers can submit up to two applications for funding, with successful applicants eligible to receive up to $90,000 based on the project category.
The Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association (OSCIA) will deliver the Agricultural Stewardship Initiative. The Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership is a five-year initiative (2023-2028) with a total investment of $3.5 billion from federal, provincial, and territorial governments. This includes $1 billion for federal programs and a $2.5 billion commitment shared between federal and provincial/territorial governments for programs designed and delivered by the provinces and territories.
Farmers in Ontario will have the opportunity to apply for funding starting from October 16 to 29, 2024. A verified Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) will be required for eligibility, and farmers in specific watershed areas are encouraged to complete a Farmland Health Check-Up to identify risks, which may qualify them for increased funding levels under selected project categories.
