Ontario Government Invests $665,880 in Northumberland's Affordable Housing Initiative

The Ontario government is investing $665,880 in the Building Skills to Build Homes project by Habitat for Humanity Northumberland. This initiative aims to train new workers in home construction and finishing trades to address the urgent need for affordable homes in Northumberland County. The funding is provided through the Skills Development Fund, a program developed by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.

Habitat for Humanity Northumberland will deliver a combination of virtual and practical training techniques, along with on-site placements, to thirty participants over eight weeks. The training will cover installation techniques and application methods necessary for residential construction projects. Participants will gain practical experience by working on Habitat for Humanity Northumberland’s affordable home build project. The program also includes career pathway guidance to help participants advance in their careers and benefit the wider community.

The Skills Development Fund supports a range of organizations for innovative projects that drive economic growth and address challenges in hiring, training, or retraining workers. The Skills Development Fund Training Stream is supported through labor market transfer agreements between the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario.
