Ontario Partners with Starlink for Satellite Internet in Remote Areas

The Ontario government has announced a partnership with Starlink to provide high-speed satellite internet to remote areas. The initiative, named the Ontario Satellite Internet (ONSAT) program, aims to connect 15,000 homes and businesses in underserved regions, including rural and northern communities, starting in June 2025. This program is part of a larger effort by the government to ensure all communities in Ontario have access to high-speed internet by the end of 2025.

The ONSAT program is included in a broader investment strategy, which involves nearly $4 billion allocated to improve internet connectivity across the province. This investment is described as the largest of its kind in Canadian history. Details regarding the registration process for eligible residences and businesses will be released in Spring 2025.

Starlink, operated by SpaceX, will utilize its satellite network to deliver broadband internet capable of supporting activities such as streaming, online gaming, and video calls. As of November 2024, Ontario has finalized agreements worth approximately $2.5 billion for over 270 projects aimed at enhancing internet and cellular connectivity. Over 100,000 homes and businesses have already been connected, with plans to connect an additional 450,000 premises by the end of 2025.
