Ontario to Expand Nursing Roles by 2025

The Ontario government has announced changes to the scope of practice for nurse practitioners and registered nurses, set to take effect on July 1, 2025. These changes will allow nurse practitioners to perform additional medical procedures, such as ordering and applying defibrillators and cardiac pacemakers, and performing electrocoagulation for skin conditions. Registered nurses will gain the ability to certify deaths in certain circumstances.

The government states that these changes aim to improve access to healthcare, particularly in Indigenous, rural, northern, and remote communities. This initiative is part of a broader plan to enhance healthcare delivery across the province.

The changes are supported by a $500 million investment to increase the number of nurses in the healthcare system, provide specialized training, and reduce barriers for internationally educated nurses to practice in Ontario. The government has consulted with the College of Nurses of Ontario and other healthcare partners to implement these changes.
